Ryan Lee Blue Ray Commentary

We’ve got a decent sample size now for me to start judging my work, and I think I’m vulnerable to criticism in at least two areas:  1) I haven’t given enough of the Superpub characters distinct voices yet.  Stan is distinct, Col USA has a different (but cliched) diction…and the rest of them tend to have the same snarky speech pattern.  Not good enough.  2) I’m not taking enough advantage of the stuff Mike is setting up for me yet.

I’m forgiving myself for # 1, because we’re still early in the game and at least I’m thinking about it.  I’m betting I work that out as we go.  This strip is me working on # 2.  (insert chili joke here)

Mike’s spider characters are extra spidery.  It’s kind of adorable.  And the first thing I thought of when we decided to run with dirty, filthy, disgusting Joe Delmar was “it would be the greatest if one of Mike’s spider-people tried to eat bugs out of his beard.”

Voila.

I think it’s extra good to make it Arachnette, too.  She’s not afraid of bugs…bugs is lunch.  Gross.

PS:  the look on Joe’s face and his hand-posing in the last panel are divine.

Monster Mike Blue Ray Commentary

I really cleaned up and refined the look of Joe Delmar’s new duds for this strip. After I got finished colouring all the nooks and crannies of his gruesome beard last week, I wanted to make sure to make it easier to work with for this week.

This will most likely be the last time we see this particular outfit since these last two strips were done as a last minute fill in, jamming them into the schedule amidst other comics in which Joe appears in his classic outfit.

I’ve really gotten to like Joe and I think he is currently my favourite Superpub customer. The loveable loser who just can’t seem to do anything right. Reminds me of myself as an older fellow.

Also; Ryan is far too hard on himself in my estimation. His scripts are great. His gags are funny and he’s really getting a good flow going. Looks like this comic might continue for a while. Which is fine with me since I’m having the time of my life working on it.
